Black Acacia Tray slabs waiting their "turn". This wood is from trees common to Australia which are often used as shade trees in cities. It is one of my favorites to "turn", however it is very hard and heavy requiring a great deal of bowl gouge sharpening to complete a woodturning project. |
A Tray Slab - The first one is a 2" thick slab for a tray. |
Cut circle on bandsaw to 16" diameter. |
Sanded for the waste block. Using a belt sander, one side of the slab is sanded flat so a "waste block" of plywood can be glued on the slab for attaching the lathe faceplate with screws. No screw holes will show in the finished tray using this method of attachment. |
Glue Waste block - Waste block being glued onto the tray slab. |
Tray mounted on faceplate and shaped. |
Tray is hollowed and is ready for sanding. |
Tray chiseled off the waste block. |
Reverse Mounted - Tray is then reverse mounted on a homemade bottom finishing jig. The tray bottom can then be finish turned on the lathe. |
Completed 16" Black Acacia Tray finished with walnut oil. |
