3 Jaw Chuck
The Grizzly 3 jaw chuck has greater jaw capacity than the Vicmarc or other wood lathe chucks. However the jaws do not come with the necessary "dovetail" shape for secure bowl holding. The addition of a "dovetail" shape to the jaws provides a wide range of both inside and outside holding power. Inside holding 1.5" to 5", outside holding 3.5" to 7". The jaws can be reshaped if you have access to a metal lathe. With the jaws tightened to their smallest holding position, the chuck is then mounted in the metal lathe chuck. Slow the metal lathe using the "back gear" and cut the jaw into the "dovetail" shape. The Blue Tape on the jaws is to reduce staining of wet wood from the iron jaws.
In use, I use the "dovetail" jaws pressing out on a dovetail cut hole in the bowl bottom. Yes the reversed jaws does grip the bowl very strongly in what would seem the "wrong" jaw direction. When the bowl is reversed in the large Vicmarc jaw chuck the dovetail cut hole is cleaned up to the finished foot of the bowl. |
