This is an excitingly unique Black Walnut bowl. It has a pleasing shape and an interesting owl cut-out pattern in the side. When I started turning this bowl, a large hole developed in one side. I asked my friend, Ivan Lee, if he had any ideas of what to do with the hole. He took the bowl home and some time later he returned it with this marvelous cut-out owl that filled in the large whole. Notice also that the right side of the bowl looks slightly caved in. This is caused by wood shrinkage during the drying process. Shrinkage also caused the wavy effect on the rim. This is a spectacularly lovely bowl designed to be on display, but it may be used to serve chips, crackers, and other such items. The bowl is finished with a clear, food safe finish which also enhances the color of the wood. Clean the bowl after each use with warm water and mild detergent. Wipe dry immediately.
